Unchartered Waters Are Where Entrepreneurs Learn To Swim

By Tricia Scott.

Here's something I've noticed recently: the women I work with and speak to tend to fall into one of two camps.

⛺️ Camp 1 - I don't know what's coming next, and it terrifies me.

and

⛺️Camp 2 - I don't know what's coming next, and it thrills me.

I imagine camp one to be filled with dried food supplies and organised with a bunch of extra blankets, you know, just in case, and camp two to be kind of mayhem-ish, with fresh food daily, a lot of impromptu dancing, and music playing, although no one seems to know where it's coming from.

Okay, so I'm making Camp Two sound more fun, but I have a point. As entrepreneurs, we must naturally be more open to taking risks than our corporate counterparts. We need to be open to the notion that anything can happen at any given moment and, additionally, that we are free enough to move with it.

I don't know about you, but my diary changes constantly, sometimes hourly. My days never seem to pan out as I plan, and although occasionally inconvenient, it's never boring and when I take time to look back over my days and weeks, I realise that the most change-laden days yielded the most positive results usually, from being in the right place at the right time and always when I hadn't planned to be there at all but rather should have been somewhere else if not for an impromptu diary upheaval.

If you're one of my super organised camp one compadres and the thought of not always knowing what comes next fills you with the terrors, I want you to remember that you don't have to go the entrepreneurial equivalent of feral. You can find a middle ground; a good test is if it makes you feel edgy and slightly daring but not so scared you start updating your CV and stalking recruiters on LinkedIn.

Somewhere in the middle, you know?

It's not about needing to know what comes next; I mean, do any of us really? It's about knowing you are committed, capable (you most certainly are) and sincere in your endeavours. It's about leaning into opportunity when it arises and making space to experience the unknown.

Believing that you can is 99% of success.

Remember, a ship in the harbour is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.

You were made for uncharted waters.

I believe in you (always).
