Advice To My Younger Biz Self: You’re Not Doing It Wrong. I Promise.
By Tricia Scott.
These last couple of weeks have been crazy busy at CEO HQ, with a brand new office space to organise business and personal commitments a-plenty. You know those weeks when you're doing everything in double time with barely a minute in between?
Yeah, it's been all of that.
I'd love to say I sailed through it all unbothered with perfect hair and not an eyelash extension out of place, but who am I kidding? I practically skidded sideways into the weekend, resembling a wild woman with scary hair and coffee superglued to my fingertips.
You'll hear me talk a lot about self-care and boundaries in these Biz Love Letters, and my readers often tell me, 'that sounds like me!' That's because I AM you. I started The Female CEO because I couldn't find people talking honestly about this stuff. It was all awards, accolades and celebrations (which I am totally here for, by the way), but I didn't feel like I belonged anywhere.
I was making mistakes, running out of money and crying into my breakfast coffee and had totally convinced myself Chardonnay belonged in the fruit food group (because, grapes), and all the while, the ENTIRE WORLD was doing business perfectly and had AMAZING hair and MANICURES. Whelp.
Unsurprisingly, I am laughing as I write this.
If you need a reminder or are staring into your fifth coffee of the day, know this: None of us are perfect. We all have lists as long as our arms, deadlines whizzing by with a resounding whoooossshhh and meetings that go by the wayside as we look for magical ways to fit just five more minutes into each hour.
Our hair is not always perfect (despite what Instagram would have you believe), and last Saturday, I was so embarrassed by the state of my neglected nails that the nail tech had to literally prise my fingers open to take a look and fix them - she also removed my phone from me to stop me answering emails for one whole hour.
Does this sound familiar?
Good. Because it's real.
So, if you find yourself landing on a Sunday night with no idea how you got there and feeling a bit windswept, here's a small thing that works for me. Find a way to reflect.
I know it sounds like another to-do, doesn't it? (don't come for me). But hear me out; it doesn't have to be a task. I tend to do it from the settee in my PJs, and far from stressing about how busy the week was and what's to come, I usually find myself laughing out loud or feeling immense gratitude as I go back over my week.
There is always something to be grateful for.
Think of it as an act of Sunday (or any day) self-love. Keep your camera handy and snap pictures of those little pockets of happiness as they come up. I started this a couple of years ago, and it's made such a difference. The more I do it, the more I actively look for the things I enjoy and am grateful for as I go; it's a self-fulfilling Win/Win.
Try it, find a version that works for you and, most importantly, enjoy the process (it's kind of the entire point).
I believe in you (always).
