Growing a villageSep 29, 2021
By Ilana Jankowitz
It's time we create a global village network.
I am originally from South Africa, the Rainbow nation, a colourful heritage full of wonderfully warm people. Nelson Mandela said, 'People are not people without other people'
I grew up as part of a community where we looked out for each other. Coming from a dysfunctional family, I was the stability for my family. I looked after my nieces and nephews from the age of 14 and later, the home where the kids came after school for lunch, stayed for dinner and often slept over because their moms were working. I soon realised that I was more than just an aunt, sister, daughter, and friend; I was part of a community that needed me.
Later, when a single friend had to go on a work assignment to the UK and asked me to have her two children for a few months while she went to earn money, it was entirely normal to me. I was used to having kids around and being there for them; I'd done it my whole life.
Several years later, we moved to Switzerland, and suddenly I did not have my community around me. I found myself working in a job that made me unhappy whilst attending coaching myself for my money mindset behaviour. This experience inspired me to become a coach and combine my years of business experience to help other women make money and be part of a community.
I believe helping a child or woman can change a village. I have 2 Nepalese girls that lived with us for two years in Switzerland and are very much part of my life. They are both fulfilling their life's mission but forever in my heart.
When it came to my business, I knew I wanted to create a community of women who support each other. Through my work, I have been able to help them grow and give them space to be themselves in business and their personal lives. As a Mindset Money coach, I knew I wanted to build a community: however, I had to do my own healing around my money behaviour and beliefs. I had to believe I was capable of giving this support. I've long since learned that you can only support others when you feel supported.
Today we have built the most beautiful space called Mindful Money Magicians, filled with incredible women from across the world. A safe space to collaborate, sit, drink a coffee and support one another. The women in our group are, thanks to each other, fulfilling their dreams and spreading kindness, the greatest gift of all.
Together we are stronger.
