Good Things Don't Come To Those Who Wait
By Tricia Scott.
I recently turned 46. And for some reason, that number has me thinking about all the things I nearly didn’t do.
Not because I couldn’t. But because I told myself:
– It’s not the right time.
– It’s not quite there yet.
– It’s not as good as theirs.
– When I’ve got more time.
– When I’ve lost the last few pounds.
– When I feel more confident.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Here’s what I know now, standing on the edge of 46:
There is always something more urgent.
There is always something unfinished.
There is always someone doing it “better.”
There will always be washing. Emails. Events. Work. Life... and if we wait for space, we will wait forever.
Procrastination is clever, you know. It dresses up as “refining.” “preparing.” “being sensible.” But most of the time, it’s just fear in a different outfit (I'm picturing a nice, sensible cardigan). Just last week, I nearly didn’t hit publish on some website changes. I’d been excited to work on it, totally in flow and creating from vision. Feeling aligned. Not comparing. Then I “just had a look” at a couple of other sites.
Suddenly, mine was too plain.
Too colourful.
Too feminine.
Not feminine enough.
IT WAS ALL JUST WRONG
I thought about starting over, unplugging and living in a cave... hovering over publish like it was a big pink self-destruct button. The drama.
But then I remembered. I’m 46 years old. No one is coming to push the button for me; I am an actual grown-up (allegedly), and I’d better be doing business like it because ready is not a feeling. It’s a decision and while we’re all over here waiting, someone else is pressing publish.
Not because they’re more talented. Not because they’re more qualified. But because they’re done negotiating with their own doubt.
So here’s the question I’m asking myself this week, and perhaps you could do the same.
What am I delaying because I want it to be perfect?
And what would happen if I just… did it?
Not flawlessly or fearlessly, just good enough.
I’ll leave you with a quote I love from Ash Ambirge: “Good things don’t come to those who wait. Good things come to those who wait for no one.”
Do the thing. Today.
I believe in you (always).
