From Complications to Community: How Stephanie Palmer is Redefining the Bariatric Journey

By Mark Sephton.

In the world of female entrepreneurship, we often define a CEO by the three pillars of Create, Evolve, and Overcome. While many leaders focus on the first two, Stephanie Palmer, a registered nurse and patient advocate, has built an entire movement on the bedrock of the third. As the founder of Bariatric Warrior Support, Stephanie is not just a clinician; she is a survivor who turned a life-threatening medical crisis into a mission of radical transparency and community resilience.

Sitting down with Mark Sephton on The Female CEO Podcast, Stephanie shared the raw, unpolished reality of her journey, proving that the most successful ventures are often born from the gaps where we once felt most alone.

The Catalyst of Change: A Story of Overcoming

For Stephanie, the road to becoming a Bariatric Warrior began with her own surgical journey. Despite her background as a healthcare professional, she faced severe post-operative complications that were entirely outside of her control. During this period, she was met with a startling realisation: no one was talking about the difficult parts.

"I felt very isolated and I felt very alone, and I didn't want anyone else to ever feel that way," Stephanie reflects. As a nurse, she possessed the clinical vocabulary to advocate for herself, but the experience left her wondering how someone without a healthcare background could possibly navigate such a complex and terrifying landscape. This spark of empathy led to the creation of Bariatric Warrior Support, a platform designed to ensure that no patient has to suffer in silence or navigate their health journey without an expert in their corner.

Understanding the Chronic Disease of Obesity

To understand Stephanie’s mission, one must first understand the complexity of the field she serves. As a Certified Bariatric Nurse and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, she specialises in the care of patients battling the chronic disease of obesity.

Bariatric surgery is often misunderstood by the general public as an easy way out or a simple cosmetic fix, but Stephanie is quick to dismantle these stigmas. "It is a tool to treat the chronic disease of obesity," she explains. The disease is deeply rooted in genetics, and for many, bariatric surgery traditionally is the gold standard for sustainable health, as it has a high success rate in resolving metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes. It is highly effective, safe, and durable option for treating severe obesity. It can give back years of your life that you may not have had without seeking treatment or having access to it.

The transformation goes far beyond the scale. By reducing visceral fat, the fat surrounding the organs, patients can often eliminate or prevent comorbidities such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. For others, the surgery is a path to fertility, helping women with PCOS achieve their dreams of pregnancy. Ultimately, it is about moving from the sidelines of life to the centre of it, gaining the ability to play with your children at the park and feeling better metabolically, emotionally, and physically.

The Mindset Shift: 90% Mental, 10% Physical

One of the most profound insights Stephanie shares is that bariatric surgery is only a small fraction of the actual work. "I always say it's 90% mindset and it's 10% the exercise, the hydration, the vitamins, and the diet," she states.

The journey requires intense mental preparation and an interdisciplinary team, including therapists and dietitians. Stephanie’s own experience was unique: after years of daily steroids and antibiotics no longer working for her gastroparesis, a condition where the stomach's motility is severely impaired. She found herself 60+ pounds heavier, leading to pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, PCOS, and high blood pressure. This is where the vertical sleeve gastrectomy was offered as not only a treatment to cure gastroparesis and help get off the steroid weight gain, but also to reverse and improve the comorbidities that came with the weight gain. Whether the surgery is for weight loss or to cure a specific ailment, the emotional toll is significant. In the initial weeks after surgery, as the body burns fat, it also releases stored estrogen, leading to a rollercoaster of emotions and a period of questioning the decision. Having a community to lean on during these "what have I done?" moments is the difference between success and despair. Trusting the process is so important, and before you know it, you will find yourself saying “why didn’t I do this sooner”.

Radical Transparency vs The "Butterflies and Rainbows" Myth

Stephanie’s leadership style is defined by what she calls radical transparency. In a social media landscape dominated by curated perfection, she chose to share the good, the bad, and the ugly of her recovery. This decision was not met without resistance.

She faced significant cyberbullying from individuals who claimed her complications weren't real or that she should be ashamed of sharing anything that wasn't butterflies and rainbows. At one point, the pressure was so great that Stephanie temporarily left social media to focus on her health while she was on 24-hour TPN via PICC line, as well as a Port, and 24-hour tube feeding via Dophoff.

However, the silence didn't last long. "My story matters and it needs to reach so many more people," she realided. By coming back and continuing to share the messy parts of healing, Stephanie has literally saved lives. Her vulnerability and authenticity gave others the courage to share their stories and realize that their own "abnormal" symptoms were worth discussing with their doctors, helping them advocate for themselves when they knew something was wrong.

Bridging the Gap: Clinical Expertise and Lived Experience

What sets Bariatric Warrior Support apart is Stephanie's dual perspective as both a registered nurse and a patient. She understands the medical gaslighting that many people in larger bodies face, where every ailment, from an earache to a chronic condition, is dismissed with a simple directive to just lose weight.

"Unless someone has gone through something or lived it, I feel it's very different," Stephanie notes. While surgeons are skilled at the procedure itself, they often lack the lived empathy to guide a patient through the post-operative mindset work or the complexities of daily recovery outside of the OR and clinic. Stephanie bridges this gap by providing advocacy services and private duty skilled nursing, both virtually and in person across the nursing compact states.

Her mission is simple: to provide affordable access to quality, compassionate, and safe care. Whether someone needs a credentialed support person for a few days after surgery or long-term advocacy through the medical system, Stephanie ensures they are seen and heard. Having someone who gets it and that can help you navigate through it all is one of the most vital things she learned through her own journey.

The Power of Community: The Bariatric Warrior Award

Stephanie’s resilience is fuelled by the very community she helped build. She shares a touching story of a time when she needed a medically necessary revision surgery that her insurance refused to cover. Facing a bill of thousands of dollars to save her own life, her community stepped in.

They raised the remaining necessary funds in secret, proving that the support she had given to others was ready to be returned tenfold. This experience was so impactful that an award was created in her honour: The Bariatric Warrior Award, which she now presents every two years to others who embody that same spirit of resilience.

"Every time that I get knocked down I will get back up," Stephanie says, attributing her strength to a stubborn fire within her. But she doesn't just want to stand alone; she wants to reach back and pull others up with her.

Advice for the Modern Female CEO

To the women building their own businesses and navigating their own hard yards late at night, Stephanie offers a powerful reminder: do not let the bullies win, and do not let anyone shut down your voice. No dream is too big.

For the longest time, Stephanie struggled with imposter syndrome, feeling as though she wasn't worthy of starting her own business despite her decade of experience. It wasn't until she received a standing ovation and was named Bariatric Advocate of the Year that she fully embraced her power.

Her journey teaches us that vulnerability is not a weakness; it is an invitation for others to be authentic. When a leader is willing to go deep with their own struggles, they create a culture where transparency is the standard and impact is the byproduct.

Connecting with the Movement

Stephanie Palmer is more than a nurse or a CEO; she is a beacon for anyone navigating a chronic illness, on a GLP-1 journey, or a surgical journey. Through Bariatric Warrior Support, she offers free consultation calls, downloadable resources, support groups, advocacy services, private duty skilled nursing for Bariatrics, Plastics, Spine, and Neurosurgery journeys, as well as other non-surgical support within the nursing compact states. She is also the Co-host of a supportive podcast to ensure that others never walk in silence.

Her message to everyone is clear: you are seen, you are heard, and you are absolutely not alone.
