Be A Lighthouse
By Tricia Scott
One of the lines on The Female CEO website says, “Communication is my favourite” (it also says I’m not Wonder Woman… but we’ve never been seen in the same room at the same time, just saying).
As part of my love affair with communication, I send this weekly love letter for your biz directly to you and this week, I’m bringing one back. Or at least, the topic anyway. The prompt for this was that last week, I met a woman who reminded me exactly why it matters.
She was brilliant. Experienced. Talented. Full of knowledge. But she was holding back from starting her new venture and sharing what she knew because, in her words:
“It’s obvious.”
“Everyone knows that.”
“It’s easy.”
No, they don’t.
And no, it isn’t.
The things that come naturally to you are often the very things someone else is desperately Googling at 2am.
And the more I’ve thought about this, the more I’ve caught myself doing it too.I even brought this up in my entrepreneurial friendship circle, and every single founder could think of a real-life example in her own business.
We do this all the time.
We downplay the thing we do brilliantly because it feels normal to us.
We dismiss the value of our gifts because they don’t feel difficult.
We stay quiet because we assume the room already knows.
And while we’re over here dimming our light…
Someone else is sat in the dark.
Confused.
Overwhelmed.
Stuck.
Waiting.
Which is why I love this analogy so much: Be a lighthouse.
There are people just metres (or a click or a phone call) away in the dark, desperate for the exact information, service, encouragement, or solution you provide.
But if your light is off?
They keep floundering.
They waste energy.
They stay stuck.
They might even drown. (Totally owning my drama.)
If they can’t see you to ask for help, and you can’t see them to offer a lifeline… who exactly is that helping?
Because what you know—your experience, story, and offer—has real value.
And there are people out there right now depending on your light for guidance, reassurance, and a route from A to B.
So this is your reminder.
Turn on your f*cking light.
Be a lighthouse.
I believe in you (always).
