The Authenticity Architect: Emma Persson on Building Authority and the Power of Self-Reflection
In a world increasingly cluttered with "fake it until you make it" mentalities, Emma Persson stands as a refreshing beacon of genuine influence. As the owner of Coach Companion, a global platform serving professionals across 50 countries, Persson has dedicated her career to a singular, profound mission: helping ambitious individuals build credibility and authority through the lens of radical self-awareness.
Recently, Emma joined Mark Sephton on the Female CEO Podcast to peel back the layers of leadership. What emerged was not a lecture on hustle culture, but a masterclass in focusing on the human being over the human doing.
The Global Village of Growth
The story of Coach Companion began over 20 years ago in Sweden. While Emma was already deeply entrenched in the people business, she noticed a significant gap: high-level training was often only available in English, leaving local professionals yearning for development in their native tongue. She didn't just join the company; she eventually bought it with her partner, Johnny, and transformed it into a global powerhouse.
Today, Coach Companion serves every continent except Antarctica. Yet, despite the vast geographical reach, Emma finds that the core human needs remain identical. "At our trainings, people find a new language of being present, a language of accepting each other, and embracing diversity" she notes. This shared experience has led her to view the world as a global village, where the growth of one professional serves to lift the entire ecosystem.
Establishing Authority: Moving Beyond the Proving Mode
One of the most significant hurdles for leaders is the transition from being a subject matter expert to a trusted authority. Emma identifies a common trap: the Survival or Proving Mode. "If you can get rid of this mode... I have to just step back and let people come with questions," Emma explains. "Make people curious, not about me, but about themselves".
The Strategy for Credibility
For those looking to establish themselves in their industry, Emma suggests a shift in focus:
- Prioritise the Who over the How: Most professionals spend too much time on websites and business cards instead of working on themselves.
- Lead by Example: Real authority is not about an agenda; it’s about others recognising positive features in you that they wish to find in themselves.
- Niche Your Business Idea: You cannot serve everyone; if you try to serve everybody, you serve nobody. To have true influence, you must know your crowd and understand exactly how you make their lives better.
Rewriting the Internal Narrative: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome
Even the most successful CEOs are not immune to self-doubt. However, Emma views Imposter Syndrome as a purely internal phenomenon, a Gremlin that lives in the mind.
"Do you believe everything you think?" Emma challenges. Many leaders carry voices from 30 or 40 years ago that have no bearing on their current reality. She suggests a radical act of reclamation: Rewriting your story.
"Many people are living their lives as they're not playing the main role in their film. They are playing some invisible statist... Take back the main role in the film called You”.
By questioning the validity of these internal monologues, leaders can move from a place of insecurity to one of grounded confidence.
The Power of Self-Reflection
As a Master Certified Coach, Emma believes the most important competency is self-reflection. This isn't about judging your past actions with harshness, but observing them as signs of growth.
"I trust everybody does their best every day," she says. The work of observation and self-reflection is never-ending; it is what keeps a professional's inner glow from fading away. This internal work allows a leader to stay in their lane and avoid the toxic habit of judging or gossiping about others.
Women Empowering Women: The End of Competition
In the competitive world of business, it can be easy to view other successful women as threats. Emma rejects this scarcity mindset.
"Secure people—people that trust themselves—would like to see other people grow," Emma asserts. "If we rise everybody up, it's better for everybody, for the society, for the well-being, for the companies".
Emma’s advice for ambitious women is simple yet profound:
- Find Role Models: Look at women who have succeeded and identify what appeals to you in their way of being.
- Empower Others: Secure women empower other women.
- Treat Yourself as a Human Being First: Don't let gendered expectations limit your potential; if you treat yourself as a human being, not just a woman, you are already one step ahead.
She reminds us that there is no competition because every individual is unique. The only real competition is with yourself, by being the best version of yourself.
How Men Can Support the Shift
The conversation concluded with a vital question: What is one thing men can do to help women in their authority?.
Emma’s response focuses on understanding and presence. "Men are doers. Sometimes women just share because they want to be listened to," she explains. She encourages men to listen and understand rather than immediately trying to solve every problem. Mark added a practical tip: "One of the best questions a man can ask a woman is... do you want me to listen or do you want my input?".
