Why do you do what you do?

Yesterday I got a text message from one of my oldest (as in time, not age) best friends. She's a self-confessed hater of all things social media and stays as far away from it as possible however she does engage in emails (she will be reading this right now 🙋🏻‍♀️) and when we met for a long-overdue catch-up lunch last week between tears, laughter and a very healthy and amazing lunch at The Naked Deli (have you tried it? OMG Its amazing) she told me that after reading my weekly She-Mails she finally decided to re-train and set herself up in Editorial and Proof Reading as a business. I am thrilled. Not only because she'll be perfect at it (she's truly one of the most meticulous humans I've ever met) but because it reminded me of why I do what I do.

My weekly email had a part to play in her future and the future of her family. Isn't that amazing?

We all need a reminder sometimes don't we? We get caught up in the 'doing' of our work and the daily grind but how often do we step back and remind ourselves why we started? What was it about what you do that excited you in the beginning? What made you take the first step? Can you even remember?

When we know our business 'Why' we engage much better with our audience, have you ever wondered how some business outsell everything else, even when the products are pretty similar? Why some leaders instil confidence and motivation and others don't? It's all to do with the business of knowing your why.

We all know what we do, mostly we know how we do it but do you know why you do it (aside from profit)? What's the message? What's the cause? What drives you? Remember;

'People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it'

Make time, go back, look at your business. Work from the inside out. Why are you here? What does it feel like? What are your beliefs? This is the message you need to project to the world and what will distinguish you from your competitors all day long. By working this way, you attract people who believe what you believe, people who buy into you and your product or service and they'll stay loyal because they're buying into you, not just what you sell.

PS- It is also the secret sauce for recruitment, hire people who believe what you believe and you'll have the best people around you forever.

There is an awesome TED talk by one of my favourite speakers, Simon Sinek all about this very thing. I would encourage you to take 20 mins, sit back and watch it here. Haven't got 20 mins? Heres a shorter version for you. If you want more then this is the place to start, more from your business and more from you life. Your work should be satisfying and bring you massive amounts of joy otherwise, whats the point? We spend most of our lives working in one way or another, make it the best it can be. Work from the inside out.

Thanks for the reminder of my why Helen, I love you.
