That Girl Meets Remi Jones: Building Community, Media Power, and the Vision Behind the Remi TV Influencer Awards

her story interviews issue 69 natasha lee that girl

Natasha Lee sits down with Remi Jones to explore the woman behind the work, the journey that brought her here and what she is building next.

By Natasha Lee.

Some women don't wait for a seat at the table—they build the table themselves. Remi Jones is one of those women. I was introduced to Remi by our tribe publicist, Tammy Reese, and immediately understood why so many people speak highly of her. What stood out most wasn't simply her impressive accomplishments in media, but her unwavering commitment to community. Remi is the kind of woman who understands that success is most meaningful when it creates opportunities for others.

As a 17-time award-winning journalist, media personality, entrepreneur, and community leader, Remi has built an extraordinary platform through Remi TV, the first Black woman-owned television show in Rhode Island. Through Remi TV Nation and the Remi TV Influencer Awards, she continues creating opportunities, recognition, and workforce pathways for communities often overlooked.

You've achieved milestones many aspire to, yet you continue building. What version of yourself are you currently outgrowing?

I am currently outgrowing people-pleasing and learning to stand firm in my boundaries. For many years, I allowed things that I should not have allowed because I wanted to be accommodating and keep the peace. Reaching this point in my life feels empowering. I now understand that honoring my boundaries is not selfish—it is necessary for my growth, my mental health, and the sustainability of the work I'm building.

With over 1,000 attendees and featured celebrity guests and performances by 702 and Carl Thomas, hosting the 2025 Remi TV Influencer Awards marked a new scale. Please tell us about the event and the memorable feedback you've obtained from that experience.

The awards were created to recognize community leaders, innovators, and unsung heroes who often go uncelebrated. What makes the event unique is that the community chooses the nominees and winners. One of the most memorable comments I received was, "I felt like a celebrity for one night." Hearing that affirmed exactly why I created the awards.

What were the best parts of 2025 for you?

2025 was challenging mentally, but seeing the joy on people's faces at the Remi TV Influencer Awards made every obstacle worth it. It reminded me that purpose often shows up after perseverance.

Congratulations on launching the Remi TV Workforce Program in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island. From your perspective, what does it take to be a successful and collaborative leader? Any updates you can share about the program for the coming year?

To be a successful leader, you have to be open to other people's ideas and willing to play the background at times. Looking ahead to 2026, the program is expanding into trade education through a partnership with AP Safety and Forklift Training, creating direct pathways to employment and economic stability.

You've interviewed celebrities, but you've also centered everyday changemakers. How do you decide when a story deserves a spotlight?

A story deserves a spotlight when someone continues to show up even without resources, support, or recognition. Those are the stories that inspire real change.

What advice would you have for aspiring entertainment and brand journalists navigating the event coverage landscape?

Stay authentic and build genuine relationships. Don't chase access—build trust. Be professional, prepared, and respectful. If doors aren't opening, build your own platform.

"Don't chase access—build trust." — Remi Jones
